Berrett-Koehler Community

Creating a World That Works for All

I LOVE this story about a guy in Portland who started a movement to reclaim public spaces in a quirky yet practical way: http://www.dailygood.org/more.php?n=4121, which is literally changing the face of the city. I saw one of these intersections when I was bicycling around Portland with my daughter and her boyfriend last spring.
It got me wondering whether this could work in other cities, how it might change the way our country "works." Might this work in a community you live in? Why or why not?

Maren, thank you for sharing. The theme of reclaiming public space as a way to build community reminds me of when Peter Block was here a few weeks ago to present his new book The Abundant Community. Similarly, he encouraged us all to look around, find our neighbors, and avail ourselves to ALL what they have to offer, and offer ourselves to them as well. He argues that if everybody would truly do this, our country would not be so burdened. I think that the strengthening of our communities is KEY to creating a country that works for all.
