Five Ways To Express Love Without Spending Money

Said a male friend of mine recently, "You cannot win Valentine's Day. You can only lose.  It's an expectations game.  The best you can possibly do is meet expectations.  There is no way to exceed them."   Of course, these social anxieties play right into the hands of retailers trying to stoke the fires of frenzied consumerism.  The more we worry about living up to the Valentine's Day hype, the more we spend.     Break the cycle, I say.  Here are five ways to…See More

Being Unique in Community

One of the most common themes of children’s literature is the idea that your deformity, the quality that isolates you from the group and makes you a subject of mockery, is not a deformity but a blessing in disguise. Rudolph saves Christmas with his red nose. The Ugly Duckling is ugly because he is bursting with the genes of graceful swanhood. Harry Potter may be a freak when he lives with the Dursleys, but he’s a hero extraordinare in the wizarding world. This is the message all of us crave…See More

Aren't We All Just So Special

Blogging, vlogging, tweeting: the commotion never stops. Anything to prove we’re just as special as everyone else. In the famous words of DASH, from the animation movie The Incredibles, “Saying everyone is special, is just a way of saying no one is.”I sympathize with you, Dash. I too am hiding my mutant superpowers in a hopeless attempt to conform with societal norms. If only my story could end as happily as yours did. How did we become such cynics, Dash? Aren’t you supposed to be a carefree…See More

Practical vs. Sentimental Environmentalism

This video shows environmentalists sitting in the middle of the forest, crying, wailing, and mourning for dead trees. This video has been widely circulated and mocked, and I would be the first to admit these people do seem rather ludicrous.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VThQr8fDiLA&feature=relatedHowever I do have something in common with them. When I was in middle school, my parents cut down a little blue spruce…See More

"Well said, Ashlock. This relates back to our discussion about how university libraries are well-stocked with graduate theses that no one will ever look at because they were never actually intended to be read."

How School Ruins Writers

C.S. Lewis, in his celebrated Narnia Chronicles, told of a runaway princess named Aravis who escaped the evil empire of Calormen and an unwanted marriage by fleeing across the desert. When a talking horse becomes her traveling companion, he demands to hear her story. Aravis sits up straight, speaks in a low melodious voice, and blows everyone away by telling her life story in the manner of a grand epic. Lewis explains her eloquence by writing, "In Calormen, story-telling (whether the stories…See More
